Host achieves best ever results in the GSL Index

We’re celebrating after being shortlisted for three categories at the prestigious GSL Awards 2025 — and achieving our best-ever results in the GSL Index Survey.
Host recorded exceptional performance in this year’s GSL Index Survey, including:

 • Earning Platinum Certified Operator status for the second consecutive year — recognising consistent delivery of excellent student experiences.
 • An overall Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +41 — the highest ever achieved by Host — compared with a large operator benchmark of +20. This marks a remarkable +21 point increase in just two years.
 • A highest individual property NPS of +83 — reflecting the outstanding experience provided at local level.
 • 88% satisfaction rating (with 53% of residents rating their accommodation as ‘very good’) — significantly above the national average.

These results led to Host being shortlisted in 3 categories for the GSL Awards:

 • Best Private Housing
 • Best Customer Service
 • Best Value for Money

The GSL Awards are the only industry accolades based entirely on verified feedback from students — making this recognition especially meaningful.

Sam Hollex, Director of Operations at Host, said:

We’re proud to once again be shortlisted for the Global Student Living Awards — an achievement that matters so much to us at Host because it comes directly from the students who live with us. Being consistently recognised year after year is a reflection of the hard work, care, effort and attention our teams bring every day, creating places where students feel supported, included and truly at home. Thank you to every member of the Host team across the UK.”

Host operates student accommodation in cities across the UK providing value-for-money, high-quality, well-managed living environments where students can thrive both academically and socially. For more information, visit: www.host-students.com

The winners of the GSL Awards 2025 will be announced in London on 16 October 2025.

About GSL

The GSL Awards [https://gslglobal.com/awards/] are based exclusively on direct feedback from tens of thousands of students across 200 universities and colleges every year. With no written nominations and no ‘expert’ judges, the Global Student Living Awards are uniquely credible and highly prized.

Data for the awards are collected through the GSL Index [https://gslglobal.com/index/]. Registration for universities and student accommodation providers to participate in the next wave of the GSL Index, is now open.

When it comes to choosing student accommodation in the UK, most people focus on price, amenities, or whether it’s en-suite or shared. While these are important factors, one element that can make or break your student life is location and commute time. It’s more than just a pin on a map – it’s about how your daily life will feel.

Why location matters more than you think.

the key to finding the perfect student accommodation

You could have the dream room with a double bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, and free Netflix in the lounge – but if you’re spending an hour commuting to campus in the rain, it’ll lose its charm fast.

Here’s why location should be top of your list when choosing where to live:

1. Proximity to campus = more sleep & less stress.

Being close to your lectures can seriously improve your quality of life. You’ll avoid early morning rushes and can afford to hit snooze (or the library) a little more often. Plus, popping back home between lectures? Game changer.

2. Transport links can make or break you.

If you’re not within walking distance, check the bus/train routes. How frequent are they? Do they run late? What’s the cost of a weekly student travel pass in that city? A £7 Uber every day adds up real quick.

3. Living near the action.

Your uni experience isn’t just about studying. Being close to town, nightlife, supermarkets, and takeaways can make your social life smoother and way more fun. That “just one drink” becomes a lot more realistic when you’re 10 minutes from home.

4. Saving without sacrificing.

Yes, sometimes further-out locations are cheaper. But balance is key. If the cheaper rent means expensive transport or fewer hours to work a part-time job, you might not be saving anything at all.

5. Mental health and convenience.

Long, tiring commutes – especially in winter – can take a toll. Being close to campus can mean more energy for studies, friends, and yourself. Less stress = better wellbeing.

Tips for getting the location right.

the key to finding the perfect student accommodation

 • Use Google Maps to time your potential walk/cycle/bus to campus.

 • Visit during different times (rush hour, night, etc.) to see how the area feels.

 • Ask current students what areas they recommend (or avoid).

 • Check for noise levels – being right above a club might sound cool until you’ve got a 9AM.

Make life easier with Host accommodation.

the key to finding the perfect student accommodation host sites

At Host, we know just how important location is for students – and that’s exactly why all our properties are either next to campus or right in the heart of the city centre.

Whether you’re studying in London, Coventry, Bournemouth, or one of the many other cities we’re in, you’ll enjoy:

 • ♂ Short walks to lectures

 • Easy access to public transport

 • Close proximity to shops, nightlife, and cafes

 • Modern, comfortable rooms in secure buildings

Because let’s be real—student life is so much better when you don’t have to spend half your day commuting.

It might feel like you’ve got plenty of time before uni starts, but trust us – when it comes to student accommodation, early birds aren’t just getting the worm. They’re getting the best rooms, the best deals, and peace of mind long before the chaos of results day kicks in.

Each year, thousands of students scramble to find the perfect place to live – and by the time they get around to it, the most popular rooms are already long gone. So if you’re heading to university this year, here’s why getting your accommodation sorted early might just be the smartest move you’ll make.

1. The rush is real – here’s why timing matters.

Booking student accommodation early

Student numbers are on the rise, and so is the demand for high-quality, secure, and well-located accommodation. But supply? Not so much. The earlier you book, the more options you have – simple as that.

We see it every year: from spring onwards, rooms start flying off the shelves (figuratively speaking). By the summer, many of our locations are nearly fully booked. For example, a large number of our UK locations were close to full occupancy by June last year — and that trend’s only growing.

2. Better choices, better rooms, better value.

Want a studio with a view? Prefer an en-suite room with loads of storage? The best options are often the first to go. By booking early, you’re giving yourself the full menu.

Plus, many of our properties offer price consistency throughout the booking season — so you don’t need to wait around hoping for a discount that might never come. In fact, booking early can actually save you money by locking in current rates before any increases.

3. Reduce stress for you and your parents.

Booking student accommodation early

Let’s face it – the end of summer is already stressful enough. Between exam results, packing, and preparing for life at uni, the last thing you want is to be panic-scrolling accommodation websites in August.

Booking your room early means one less thing on your to-do list. You can relax over summer knowing your new home is secured, your move-in date is sorted, and you won’t be couch-surfing during fresher’s week.

It’s not just students who feel the relief – parents love knowing their child has a safe, comfortable place ready to go. Total win-win.

4. Flexible booking = Smart booking.

Worried about changing plans? Don’t be. At Host, we offer flexible booking options to give you added peace of mind when you reserve your space.

By offering No Place No Pay and No Visa No Pay across all of our locations in the UK, our goal is to make early booking feel like the safest option, not the riskiest.

Ready to book? Let’s go.

When it comes to student life, getting ahead makes all the difference – and it starts with securing your space.

It can feel nerve-wracking when you start looking at university choices. From travel and leaving home, to the stress of the important upcoming life event. Are you attending a university open day soon? If so, read on to find out our top tips and guidance when attending an open day and the important considerations to be aware of in advance.

Preparing for a uni open day.

It is important to prepare for a university open day, to make sure you get all your questions answered and that you find out as much as possible. Consider taking a notebook and pen for any notes or comments you may have. Take a bag too as you may be given information, leaflet and booklets (and maybe even some goodies).

If you have any last minute questions about the day and need to know more, get in touch with the university directly and they can help you.

Travelling to an open day.

It is a good idea to experience the journey to the university open day from your home. You can then reflect on the time and cost associated with being a certain distance from home.

If you are attending alone, most university campuses have great transport links so you’ll be able to easily work out train/buses if you don’t have access to a car.

Ask lots of questions.

It is common for student ambassadors to guide you through university open days. Student ambassadors are current students who are the best people to talk to if you want honest reviews about the uni and area. This is your opportunity to ask questions about life as a student in the location and university.

University talk.

Typically the university will start the day with a welcome talk followed by events and locations you may want to visit throughout the day. Most universities will give talks to prospective students about their institution, facilities campuses and general information. These talks are important to attend and listen to carefully, notebooks at the ready!

Subject talk.

university open day

Most universities will offer subject specific workshops and talks. These are usually attended by parents and supporters as well, so if you are visiting with company, they may wish to join you. These talks are essential to learn more information about the course and of course to ask any questions you have.

University student accommodation options.

If you are planning on moving in to student accommodation when you start university, take a look at the local options whilst you are in the area. Some universities will arrange to show you accommodation options. These options may be university halls, that are close to campus. There are other options to consider – such as purpose build student accommodation (PBSA) and privately rented accommodation.

Hassle-free, all bills included student accommodation.

If you are looking for student accommodation in the UK, we offer hassle-free, all-inclusive student accommodation in 18 cities and towns.

Applicant Days.

Have you heard of Applicant Days? If not, you may be asking what is an applicant day? Applicant days are an essential step in your university journey. They are subject specific days which give you the opportunity to learn more about your chosen university and course. Read our pointers about applicant days.

The post Why Host is the perfect student accommodation in Exeter for 2025 appeared first on Host students.

]]>
If you’re a University of Exeter student looking for accommodation for September 2025, the big question is: student halls or a shared house?
While moving into a student house with friends might seem like the natural step after first year, Host’s student accommodation in Exeter offers a better, more hassle-free alternative. With three fantastic properties – Northernhay House, Trust House, and The Northfield – you can enjoy all the benefits of independent living without the stress of renting privately.
Here’s why Host is the smart choice for your next year at uni.

Prime locations close to campus:

Location is everything when it comes to student living, and Host’s Exeter properties put you right where you need to be. Whether you want to be close to campus, the city centre, or key transport links, we’ve got you covered.

 • Northernhay House – Just a short walk from the University of Exeter and smack in the middle of the city centre. You’ll have all of Exeter’s best shops, restaurants, and nightlife right on your doorstep.
 • Trust House – Located in St. James, only a 15-minute walk to the university, with great access to local pubs, supermarkets, and St James Park station for easy travel.
 • The Northfield – Literally across the road from Exeter St David’s station, making it ideal for students who travel home frequently. Plus, it’s just a 10-minute walk to campus!

Compare that to a student house, where you could end up miles away from campus or stuck with a long uphill walk every morning. Not ideal.

No hassle. No hidden costs:

Let’s talk money. Renting privately might seem like the cheaper option at first, but hidden costs quickly add up. With Host, you get one all-inclusive price, covering:

 • Rent (no surprise increases halfway through the year!).
 • All bills included (electricity, water, heating, and high-speed Wi-Fi).
 • No deposit needed – You pay £200 advanced payment on booking which is deducted from your rent.
 • Free contents insurance for peace of mind.

Now think about private renting. You’ll need to split bills, chase housemates for payments, and deal with unexpected charges. With Host, you pay once a month, and that’s it—no stress, no extra admin.

Reliable maintenance & support:

Ever had to wait weeks for your landlord to fix something? One of the biggest downsides to private renting is unreliable maintenance. At Host, you don’t have to worry. Our on-site teams handle any maintenance issues quickly and efficiently, so you’re never left waiting.
What does this mean for you? No chasing up landlords for repairs | 24/7 team available for support | Secure, well-maintained buildings.
It’s a level of service that student houses simply can’t match.

Fully-furnished rooms:

Forget damp walls, dodgy furniture, and mismatched kitchen appliances. With Host, you get fully furnished rooms designed for student life.

 • Northernhay House – Offers a range of en-suite rooms, shared apartments, Studios and one bed flats all furnished with a comfy bed, desk, and plenty of storage. Perfect for students who want to be in the heart of Exeter.
 • Trust House – Enjoy en-suite rooms with shared kitchens or opt for a studio for extra privacy. Social yet independent!
 • The Northfield – Offers a mix of standard, en-suite, and studio options, all in a prime location near campus and the train station.

Meanwhile, private houses can be hit-or-miss. You might get lucky, or you might be stuck with ancient furniture, peeling wallpaper, and a landlord who “forgets” to fix things. Why take the risk?

A student community & social spaces:

When you live with Host, you’re not just renting a room—you’re part of a thriving student community.

 • Trust House and The Northfield offer great social spaces where you can meet new people, study together, or just chill.
 • Regular events bring students together, making it easy to make friends.
 • Safe, secure buildings with 24/7 support, so you can relax and focus on uni life.

If you move into a shared house, you might only interact with the same few housemates. With Host, you’ll be surrounded by students from different backgrounds, courses, and years—giving you a bigger, more exciting social circle.

No stress over utility bills or deliveries:

Living in a student house means dealing with the hassle of splitting bills. Who’s paying for Wi-Fi? What happens if someone moves out early? With Host, bills are included, and you never have to worry about unexpected charges.
Plus, if you love online shopping, Host properties have parcel collection services—so you never have to stress about missing a delivery. Compare that to a shared house, where you’re relying on housemates to be in (and not forget to tell you!).

Hassle-free booking:

Host understands that student life isn’t one-size-fits-all. We offer a number of tenancy lengths, so you can choose the contract that works for you. Plus, booking is super easy—no endless paperwork or waiting on landlords. Just pick your room, sign up, and you’re sorted.

Is it too late to apply to uni? https://host-students.com/information/new-students/is-it-too-late-to-apply-to-uni/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 09:25:28 +0000 https://host-students.com/uncategorized/is-it-too-late-to-apply-to-uni/ Are you thinking of applying to university and wondering if it is too late to apply for uni? Don't worry, still have time to submit your application. If you miss the 31 January 2024 deadline for most other courses, you may still be able to apply after the deadline has passed. Universities and colleges often consider applications received after the 31 January deadline if there are available, but you do risk missing out on your top university/course choice if it’s popular.

Are you sat at home wondering is it too late to apply to uni? Don’t worry, you still have time to submit your application.

What date do I have to apply on UCAS by?

Is it too late to apply to uni 2024 ucas

UCAS have particular deadlines depending on what course you are applying for.

Courses with 15 October 2024 deadlines.

Late applications for courses with the 15 October 2024 deadline are unlikely to be considered as these courses are particularly competitive. These Universities are usually Oxford and Cambridge and are to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary courses.

Courses with 29 January 2025 deadlines.

If you miss the 29 January 2025 deadline for most other courses, you may still be able to apply after the deadline has passed. Universities and colleges often consider applications received after the 29 January deadline if there are spaces available, but you do risk missing out on your top university/course choice if it’s popular.

Important: Any applications that are not submitted by the 30th June 2025 at 6pm will be entered in to UCAS Clearing.

When is UCAS Clearing 2025?

This year, UCAS Clearing starts on the 5th July and closes on the 20th October at 6pm.

Here are some other key dates to be aware of and save on your phone so you don’t miss out…

 • 4th July – Last date to add a UCAS Extra Choice
 • 14th August – A Level Results Published

Search for the right course.

Is it too late to apply to uni 2024 ucas

Use UCAS Search to find courses that still have places available. You can also do research on university life on The Student Room to get the feel of the location.

It is important to remember that course availability will be changing as time goes by. It would be beneficial to contact the universities admissions departments before applying to find out their availability. Be sure to explain your circumstance during your call to ensure they can help you to the best of their abilities.

Will the universities see that I applied late to UCAS?

Universities must consider every application they receive, however, after the 29th January, they are no longer required to treat every application the same but more as a ‘first come first serve basis’. So it is important to get your application submitted as soon as you can.
