{"id":4092,"date":"2022-05-10T14:51:11","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T14:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/host-students.com\/uncategorized\/feeling-lonely-in-university\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T12:16:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T12:16:20","slug":"feeling-lonely-in-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/host-students.com\/information\/new-students\/feeling-lonely-in-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeling lonely in university"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Feeling lonely at university might seem strange but it\u2019s actually very common, especially with online lessons and lectures becoming the norm over the last couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>You can be surrounded by many people and still feel lonely, just as you can be alone and not lonely. It\u2019s a feeling most people will experience at some point in their lives and it\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to the feeling of loneliness whilst at university:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Moving away from home, family and friends.<\/li>\n<li>Adjusting to a new environment, city or even country.<\/li>\n<li>Living at home during university, being a mature student and feeling like you\u2019re missing out.<\/li>\n<li>Online lectures and lack of social interaction and routine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The thing to remember is that feeling lonely at university is perfectly normal, especially for first year students, but there are plenty of resources available to help you right on your doorstep.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24052\" src=\"https:\/\/host-students.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/How-do-I-know-if-Im-lonely-.jpg\" alt=\"How do I know if Im lonely\u00a0\" width=\"965\" height=\"368\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #b455a0;\">How do I know if I&#8217;m lonely?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Being lonely isn&#8217;t the same as being alone. You may <em>feel<\/em> like there&#8217;s just &#8216;<em>something<\/em>&#8216; missing, it may not be definable but if one of the following bothers you, you may be lonely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t have someone I feel really close to.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t have much in common with the people around me.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t know many people to hang out with.<\/li>\n<li>No-one asks how I\u2019m feeling, or how my day went.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t have anyone I can be myself around.<\/li>\n<li>A problem is getting me down, but I can\u2019t tell anyone.<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t join in with things because I feel different to others (i.e. because of money, age, disability, politics, or something else).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24051\" src=\"https:\/\/host-students.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/How-can-I-cope-with-loneliness.jpg\" alt=\"How can I cope with loneliness\" width=\"965\" height=\"368\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #b455a0;\">How can I cope with loneliness?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You can&#8217;t just switch off the feeling of loneliness, but there are ways to handle those feelings. Mindfulness or keeping a diary all help identify and release those feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t feel like it, make plans to be around others. Just remember, it\u2019s not necessarily the quantity of social interactions that can help, but the quality. University is the perfect place in finding likeminded people who share similar interests so don\u2019t feel afraid to strike up a conversation with someone in your class or your flat. Invite them for a drink or study session or even cook together. The companionship will lift your mood, and reduce feelings of isolation.<\/p>\n<p>Joining a club or sports team, meet new people and broaden your social circle. Student Unions also hold plenty of events like quiz nights, bingo lingo and music nights which are a great way to connect with others.<\/p>\n<p>Opening up about how you feel can really help cope with loneliness. It&#8217;s difficult to talk but sharing how you feel with family, a friend, someone you trust or even contacting a support organisation will make the world of difference.
